Everyone wants a brighter smile, and the internet is full of cheap DIY tricks. The problem is that enamel does not grow back, once you strip it away, it is gone for good. Here is what is safe and what is not.
Home remedies to avoid
Lemon juice and vinegar are acids that dissolve enamel. Baking soda used aggressively is abrasive and wears the surface down. Charcoal powders are abrasive too and have no proven whitening benefit. These may look effective for a week, then leave teeth more sensitive and, ironically, more yellow as thinning enamel exposes the darker layer underneath.
What actually works
Professional in-clinic whitening uses controlled peroxide gels that lift stains from within the enamel without scrubbing it away. It is faster, safer and far longer-lasting than any home hack. For deep or fluorosis stains, veneers may be a better route.
Keep it white longer
Rinse after chai and coffee, avoid tobacco, and get a cleaning twice a year. Whitening lasts far longer when the surface stains never get a chance to build up.
